Here I am doing a bit of Green Screen filming, playing Lord George Macartney in 'Empires of Silver' - a documentary/drama about the Opium Wars.

Lord Macartney was sent to China by King George III on an important diplomatic mission to increase trade opportunities between the two nations - largely to fuel Britain's recent addiction to black tea. When the ship-load of beautifully crafted British gifts failed to charm the Chinese, England had to rethink. The East India Company had a brainwave - growing poppies and pushing drugs to China. Result. Cuppa, anyone?

More soon.

I was delighted with the success of 'Somewhere in England' (The Bedford Play) which premiered at The Quarry Theatre, Bedford in September. Each of the 8 performances was a sell-out with excellent feedback from all who saw it. I'm very much hoping to revive the production in the future.

I'll keep you posted...

It's two years since I was first commissioned to write and direct 'Somewhere in England' (The Bedford Play), and I'm really excited to say that rehearsals are about to begin. With a company of 20 professional actors and musicians, the production runs at the wonderful Quarry Theatre at St. Luke's, Bedford between the 8th and 14th September.

Hope to see you there!

Arnold Wesker has died at the age of 83. He was one of the best dramatists of his generation, credited with being a founding father of the kitchen sink drama. He was also a longtime literary hero of mine, and encouraged me during my early days as a playwright - most memorably outside the stage door of a Brighton pub where my play Casting Shadows was being presented. RIP to this great 'angry young man'.

In other (more cheery) news, my next Radio 4 play 'All Mouth & Trousers' airs on 27th April. Tune in at 2.15pm to find out who Britain's first female sitcom writer was.
